~ Writer's Thoughts ~

On this date in 1831 Choctaw Nation's people begin the "Trail of Tears", a forced March from Mississippi to Oklahoma during which nearly 1/3rd of the Choctaw Nation perishes.

On this date children still do not know that the land where they live was stolen at this point of a bayonet.

November is Native American Heritage Month, or as it is commonly refered to, American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month.

The month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. Heritage Month is also an opportune time to educate the general public about tribes, to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.

~ Inspiration ~

“The love of possession is a disease with them; they take tithes from the poor and weak to support the rich who rule. They claim this mother of ours, the Earth, for their own and fence their neighbors away.”

- Sioux Chief Sitting Bull
